Book Blogger Hop

Happy long weekend! Since it is the long weekend, after not participating in far too long, I am once again doing the Book Blogger Hop. It is a cool way to get to know others out there across the blogosphere, whether one is a writer or simply an admirer of the written word. It is hosted by Jennifer over at Crazy-For-Books.

Part of getting to know one another is to provide an answer to a prompt. This week's question was provided by Sarah over at Sarah reads too much: "Do you judge a book by it's cover?"

I am afraid that I must confess that I do tend to judge books by this unfair standard. As a child we are instructed that this was something to avoid. As a writer, who's hard work could be torpedoed by a poor cover, you would think that I would make every effort to give other novels and their authors the benefit of the doubt. Bad Jimmy! I should endeavor to do better!

How about you? Whether you are a long-time follower or a new one, I would like to see your response to the same question.

By the way, if you are new and wonder why the same song might be playing over and over again, it had to do with my previous post. I plan on refilling the jukebox sometime this weekend.

Speaking of that, have a great weekend and happy blog hopping!

We'll talk soon.

  1. Thanks for dropping by on the Book Blogger Hop. "Dance on Fire" great title! I'm a sucker for anything horror/mystery. Sounds like a great read.

  3. Hi! Thanks for stopping by. "Dance on Fire" sounds interesting. I don't know why exactly, but I've always liked stories that combine detectives and the super-natural... probably because it's not a combo you see too often these days.

  6. Hey James. While I do glance at the cover, I mostly judge a book by what's written on the jacket flap. If that sounds interesting, then I pick it up. Same thing with the title!

  7. I will never buy or not buy a book based on its cover because when I buy a book it's usually by recommendation or because of the author. But, being the superficial person I am, like I often do with people's outfits, I will scoff at certain book covers and think, "Really? That's the best they can do?"

  9. To Julie and Missed... Ladies, I thought that this was such an easy, and yet, difficult question to have been asked. It was easy to think to ask, and yet, for me, gave me such pause before answering.
As I said, you would think that I would not be this way about covers, but have been so guilty of pulling my hand back if the cover did not look appealing. It is something to work on.
Missed, I'm still giggling about your significant other being lucky at spelling...that word correctly. I chose not to spell it here, for fear of choosing his version and offending. ;)
Ladies, enjoy what's left of your weekends,
    -Jimmy

  13. Hi James! Great to find your blog... love the design. I definitely DO judge a book by it's cover. It's how I'm drawn to it and if I don't pick it up to begin with, I'm probably not going to read it.

  14. I can't say I judge a book by its cover. It might help draw my attention, but I must read an excerpt now if they wish me to purchase said book. I just have too many books to read to go and buy another because I liked the cover!

Of course, I certainly hope WHEN the day comes and I'm published, that I have a wonderful cover - just so those who DO judge by the cover will be inspired to buy mine!

  15. Erin - thanks so much for following. It is great to meet you. I sent you an e-mail, but let me once again offer my congratulations on the upcoming release of your book. My wife and I still have our "What To Expect When You're Expecting" books even though we do not need them anymore. Hopefully you will have the same success with yours.
Stacy - We won't even need a cover when yours comes out! We'll just order it sight unseen! ;)
    Thanks for stopping by, Ladies.

  16. Hi James!

I don't think I judge a book by its cover. I used to, back before I plunged full force into writing. Now, the first thing I do is read the blurb on the inside cover, check out the back, then read the first few paragraphs. Mainly, I do that to see what they did, and find out if I felt hooked right away. If I did, I buy it (when I can). If not, I try to figure out what didn't grab my attention.

Also, lately I haven't even had to do that, as I've been reading so many book reviews/recommendations here on blogger, that I just go out and buy the ones that sound good.

  17. Hey, Snip! Thanks for the follow. (people are thinking to themselves, "Snip"?)
Jessica, I haven't been able to read as much as I would love to, but, just like you, I have been reading per blogger recommendation. Hopefully when my e-book becomes a paperback here shortly, I'll get to spend more time in bookstores and test my new resolve to ignore covers. I'll be sure to report back. ;)
So great to meet you. Have a great week,
    -James

Thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate you taking the time. I'll get back to you here or on one of the other social networks. It's not like we're not on all of them, right? ;) Also, if you're here to give me an award - bless you. However, your friendship and visits are more than enough. Thanks and blessings.
